Joint investment to make Comox Community Centre more energy efficient

A joint investment between the federal government and the Town of Comox will see the Comox Community Centre upgraded for better energy efficiency.

The announcement comes from Comox Mayor Nicole Minions and the minister of international development and minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, Harjit Sajjan.

A total for $485,000 will be invested, with $376,917 from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program and $108,915 from the Town of Comox.

The centre will become more energy efficient and emit less greenhouse gasses by upgrading its gas-fired hot water heating systems to electric heat pumps, according to the government.

They add lighting will be upgraded to LEDs, and heat pumps will take over the air conditioning and heating.

The upgrades will reduce the centre’s energy consumption by around 30 per cent and its greenhouse gas emissions by around 29 tonnes, according to the government.

Minions says the investment is a step towards the town’s goals in seven years’ time.

“Sustainability is one of the town’s priorities and is part of a decision-making pillar we use to improve the efficiency of our operations,” said Minions.

“It is one more step forward in achieving our goal of near net-zero emissions by 2030. This investment will impact our community long-term by reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.”

Sajjan adds upgrading buildings is an “indispensable” step towards stronger and healthier communities.
