Comox Valley Child Development Association unveils new mural

The works of artists from across the country and around the world are represented in a large mural for the Comox Valley Child Development Association.

Made up of over 2,000 individually painted tiles, the three by six metre mural depicts a tree surrounded in blue and green for the valley to see.

The mural was donated through collaboration with Mural Mosaic, who started in 2003 led by artist Lewis Lavoie. Artists, staff, children and local clubs contributed to the mural to put it together.

Lavoie says the project has been a journey, and says the aim is to celebrate inclusion in the projects.

“One of the things that I personally am always trying to do is to encourage people to have as much freedom in their tile and say what they need to say in their tile,” said Lavoie. “What I’ve realized is everybody is trying to say something positive, and they’re trying to see the whole project succeed.”

The association says this is a part of giving their building a refresh and Courtenay mayor Bob Wells added how grateful he is to have the association in the community.

“It inspires me so much not just that we have a centre like this and people that run the centre, but how our community comes together to support the centre,” said Wells.
