Trailers, wooden structure damaged in early morning fire at North Island College

A wooden roof structure will need a fair bit of repair and some portable classrooms are badly damaged after an early morning fire at North Island College.

Courtenay fire chief Kurt MacDonald says crews were called at around 3 o’clock and found four portables and a wooden roof structure were on fire.

Eighteen firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly, according to MacDonald and ambulance, police and BC Hydro were also on scene.

MacDonald adds there were no injuries during the blaze.

“We do not have a cause for the fire, but we will be working with the RCMP with the fire investigation,” said MacDonald.

MacDonald adds the roof structure will need significant repairs and two of the portables were badly damaged.

He adds the working fire alarm system helped them knock the fire down faster and prevent the remaining portables from being damaged.

“It doesn’t matter if you have a commercial one in your commercial property or if you have a smoke alarm in your house,” said MacDonald. “It’s just important that those systems are functioning, and they definitely do help.”
