Police needing witnesses for fatal Courtenay hit and run

Comox Valley RCMP say they are looking for witnesses, dashcam or surveillance footage of a fatal hit and run from last (Thursday) night.

Officers say they got report just before 11 o’clock of an injured cyclist on the Comox Valley Parkway near Minto Road. They add the cyclist was found by a passerby who called 911 for help.

Emergency Health Services and Courtenay Fire Department attended the scene, however, the cyclist died of their injuries after being taken to the hospital.

Police say investigators are working to figure out the exact time the hit and run happened. They say the cyclist was riding a red and white Specialized bicycle. RCMP add if you were in the area as early as 9 o’clock and may have seen the cyclist or have dashcam footage can help in the investigation.

“We are asking anyone who was travelling along the Comox Valley Parkway or surrounding area to carefully review their dashcam footage and come forward if they were in the area during this time and may have captured something. The vehicle involved is suspected to have some new front-end damage,” said Comox Valley RCMP media relations officer Cst. Monika Terragni.

“We are also asking that anyone with any information that may be relevant to our investigation come forward, this includes the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision, any passengers, and anyone who might have noticed some very recent, potentially suspicious damage to a vehicle.”

Investigators from the Integrated Collision Analyst Services and Integrated Forensic Identification Services collected information last night and investigators from the Major Crime Unit and Street Crimes Unit will be in the area today (Friday).

Anyone with information, dashcam footage or surveillance is asked to call Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and refer to file number 2024-1916.
