Second Spring-clean up to return ahead of Earth Day

With Earth Day a few weeks away, the annual Spring clean-up event is set to return to Courtenay.

The event, run by the city, aims to bring the community together to practice environmental stewardship.

With this being the second spring clean-up, Mayor Bob Wells says they are hoping to build on the success of last year’s event.

“We had a strong turnout last year and positive feedback from participants,” said Wells. “We’re adding a second location this year and hope this will become an annual event going forward.”

The city says if garbage and debris in urban and natural environments doesn’t get removed, it can get washed into storm drains, creeks, and waterways.

Volunteers can meet either at Harmston Park or Courtenay Air Park for a safety orientation, where city staff will then give them trash pickers/grabbers, bags, and gloves to pick up the trash.

The clean-up is set for Saturday April 20 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
