Sewer infrastructure in the Puntledge area will be getting upgrades.
The city of Courtenay says a $4 million construction project is underway in the Puntledge neighborhood. It will focus on upgrading the 60-year-old lift station on 1st street, increase sewer capacity, mitigate operational risks, and lower maintenance costs.
Director of engineering services Chris Davidson says this is the most important sewer project right now.
“The current lift station has reached the end of its service life,” said Davidson.
“It is critically important that we replace it to ensure we’re providing adequate sewer service for Puntledge neighborhood residents.”
The city says work will include replacing and upgrading 450 meters of gravity sanitary sewer main between Menzies and Willemar avenues, and 250 meters of sanitary sewer force main between 1st street and Pidcock avenue.
Because of the project, traffic and parking impacts can be expected, with the public washrooms at Puntledge park closed while crews are working. The park itself will still be open.
The project is scheduled to finish by November this year.
