Category 2 and 3 burning to be banned starting at noon

Starting at noon, Category 2 and 3 fires are banned in the Comox Valley.

The ban was put in by local fire departments because of drier than usual spring weather.

According to the province, a category 2 fire burns material in one pile not over 2 meters in height and 3 meters in width. For category 3, it burns material in 3 or more piles each in the same measurements as Category 2.

Regional rural fire chief of Oyster fire rescue Bruce Green says while the ban is in effect, you still can put up a campfire in most places.

“You will need to confirm with the local fire department,” said Green. “A campfire is defined as a fire no bigger than 50 cm in diameter using seasoned firewood for warmth, cooking, or ceremonial purposes. At this time, beach fires will also still be permitted where allowed.”

The Comox Valley Regional District says the ban affects all of their properties including Hornby Island, Denman Island, Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland, and the ships point fire protection area.
