Residents to rally Thursday for reduced speed limit on Ryan Road East

A petition calling for a lower speed limit on Ryan Road East has gathered 1,176 signatures.

Courtenay-Comox MLA Brennan Day will bring the petition to the B.C. legislature when the House resumes.

Day said residents concerned about traffic safety will rally Thursday at 3 p.m. at 1849 Ryan Road East in Comox, calling for a review of the speed limit and greater attention to safety along the corridor.

Day said residents have been advocating for improvements for nearly a year, with his office helping them identify ways to raise their concerns with the appropriate authorities.

“Ultimately, this is about making sure people feel safe in their own community,” said Day. “The residents have done the work to bring this issue forward, and they deserve to have their concerns heard and considered.”

Upgrades are slated for a section of Ryan Road, though none of the changes have to do with speed limit reductions.

The City of Courtenay’s Ryan Road Sidewalk Upgrade project is expected to begin this month.

The project will add approximately 350 metres of sidewalk between Back Road and Sandwick Road to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and connectivity and fill a gap in the city’s active transportation network.

Day is encouraging residents to continue raising their concerns with the appropriate authorities and advocating for safety improvements along the road.
